Course Description+

Students enrolled in this course will receive comprehensive training to become Emergency Medical Responders. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including understanding and adhering to the proper scope of practice for an Emergency Medical Responder, mastering the correct medical procedures for different emergency scenarios, becoming proficient in the use of essential medical instruments, and developing a solid understanding of the musculoskeletal system. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to participate in weekly field trips to relevant locations like Emergency Rooms and Fire Stations, providing them with practical exposure to real-life situations. If the student is not at least 17 years old, they will not be able to participate in the field trip to the Fire Station. This course will not provide any type of certification. This course will not allow a student to join the pre-med program or take the place of any American Heritage pre-med courses.

Prerequisite: Self-Driven, strong desire to learn

This 3-week semester course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Session 1B: 6/09/25 - 6/27/25 (12:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit - In Person Palm Beach
Session 3B: 7/21/25 - 8/08/25 (1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit - In Person Broward

For 0.50 credit or audit the student should only take one session in one specified 3-week time period

Meet Dr. Carlos Pulido+

Dr. Carlos Pulido is a physician trained in and specializing in trauma surgery. He has 32 years of experience in education and has been part of the American Heritage family for 25 years. With Dr. Laurie, he developed the Pre-Med Program and continues to develop and change the curriculum and the courses as the demands change in the medical field. He was part of the beginning of the technology inclusion in education at American Heritage when he was selected to be part of a laptop pilot program and was sent to Apple Corporation to be trained as a help desk and tech specialist to troubleshoot any issues faculty or students would encounter. Dr. Pulido was part of the South Florida Task Force in Trauma and the Committee on Trauma and EMS of Florida as well as having served as an American Heart Association international advisor. He was the medical officer for the EMS division for the City of Pompano Beach Fire and EMS Departments.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
