Course Description+

The Business Essentials Honors class presents an overview of the world of business allowing students to explore real company data and scenarios, past and present, as vehicles for learning how businesses start, operate, and succeed (or fail). Along the way, students are exposed to various career paths in business, financial and operational reporting, typical business processes, various forms of organization design, and likely management challenges. Unit flow is organized to take an in-depth look at businesses from distinct perspectives, including: Strategic, Production, Financial, Human Capital, Technological, Real and Intellectual Property, Marketing, Customer Relationship Management, Regulatory, Community and Social Responsibility, and Leadership with appropriate business terminology acquired in each unit of study.

Session dates:
Session 1B: 6/10/24 - 6/28/24 (12:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.) (EST) - 0.50 credit

3 weeks course

For 0.50 credit or audit the student should only take one session in one specified 3-week time period

Meet Rivana Stadtlander+

Rivana Stadtlander is an independent consultant specializing in planning and implementation of strategic initiatives. Through her firm think.plan.work she guides business owners in a one on one format through Project Conception, Planning, and Quality Assurance. Prior to forming her own practice, Rivana was a Director with Andersen Business Consulting’s worldwide Strategy, Organization and People Team – a 1,000-member group focused on Change Management for clients of the larger global organization. In her career, Rivana has worked with clients across industries and with a variety of challenges, ranging from reengineering Fortune 500-company back office operations to strategic planning for government agencies. Rivana began her career working in management with Bell Atlantic Corporation, and prior to that as the Director of Marketing for Softeasy Software, Inc., one of the earliest certified Apple® VARs. She is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing and a Master of Science in Publications Management. Rivana is a LEED Green Associate, and is a member of American Mensa, Ltd. The work she is most proud of is her participation with Each One Teach One, the literacy training corps begun by Frank Laubach more than 100 years ago.

Meet Harry Torres+

Harry Torres has been teaching at American Heritage School for the past 11 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Florida International University. He has spent 16 years in education, teaching a variety of social studies courses in grades 6-12. As a part of the American Heritage faculty, he has had the privilege of successfully preparing hundreds of seniors for the AP Macroeconomics exam.

Additional Course Information+

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
