Course Description+

Applied Psychology Honors is an advanced course where students will investigate psychological theories related to personal growth and development, as well as examine the ways people deal with choices and changes in life. Students will explore the following topics: stress management, identity, communication, growth dynamics, relationships, health and wellness, leadership skills, meaning, purpose, and quality of life.

Honors level classes can expect more rigorous requirements for assignments and assessments.

This 3-week semester course is offered for first time credit, for credit grade replacement, or for non-credit enrichment in preparation for taking the course in the future. Please check with your school regarding credit from outside institutions.

Meet Suzanne Williamson+

Suzanne Williamson has a background in Evolutionary Biology, Genetics, and Human Evolution. She holds a Masters of Arts in Forensic Anthropology and has a graduate research background in ecology and human biology. Mrs. Williamson has been teaching at the high school level for 10 years and has taught introductory courses at NYU for 4 years prior to that. In 2017, she was a Dwyer Award finalist. Suzanne has been a Green School Coordinator, and she is currently the Green Team Sponsor at AHS as well as the Junior High Science Research Teacher in addition to teaching her high school science courses. Suzanne has taught all levels of Environmental Science and Environmental Health as well as multiple levels of Biology.

Meet Dr. Kim Schear-Katz+

Dr. Kimberlee Schear-Katz has taught undergraduate and graduate level college courses both in the classroom and online for 13 years. She has taught high school level psychology, government, and economics classes for 16 years. In addition, she teaches AP Psychology. Dr. Schear-Katz has a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, a Master's in Mental Health Counseling and has been a therapist for 6 years. She is proud that the last time her class played the Florida High School Virtual Stock Market game her student came in first place.

Meet Lara Herrera+

Lara Herrera is a 17-year veteran educator. She has been a member of the American Heritage School faculty for three years, teaching Psychology, Sociology, and other social studies courses. Previously, she taught AP Psychology in Broward Schools, served as the Lead AP Psychology Teacher for the Local Advanced Placement Credentialing Program, and sponsored the Psychology Club (with a competition team). She has also been the recipient of grants from both the College Board and the American Psychological Association for training and travel with students. Lara holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and is currently a graduate student in Nova Southeastern University's General Psychology program and a Teacher Affiliate of the American Psychological Association, , as well as a Master of Science in Psychology from Nova Southeastern University.

A class may be canceled if fewer than 6 students enroll, and a specific teacher is not guaranteed. It is the parents’ responsibility to check with their child's school when seeking credit for a course. For online courses, the students’ cameras MUST be turned on at all times, and attendance is mandatory. To protect the privacy rights of all, there is absolutely no videotaping or recording by students during the course. Students must be age appropriate for the course, and all students must adhere to proper online etiquette. For online courses, young children must be supervised by a parent at all times.
